A NOTE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT

Richard StokesAs we enter the final stretch of this unprecedented and unusual school year, I am hopeful of more normality on the horizon. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us in so many ways, but we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel. More and more teachers and employees have received vaccinations. Our 7th and 8th graders were reintroduced to a more traditional education model where they attend school in-person, 4-days per week, while students at Carson High School remain in a hybrid model through the remainder of the school year. But we do look forward to the possibilities of normal “school as usual” for the coming 2021-2022 school year.  We will continue to monitor the health conditions at the regional and local levels and will work collaboratively with government and industry leaders to help keep students and staff safe.

With the Governor’s announcement to return to full occupancy June 1, I am pleased with Carson High School’s decision to host an in-person graduation ceremony Sat., June 5. I was also glad to hear Carson High’s ability to host Prom for seniors who have endured so much this past year. As we press forward, we have plenty to celebrate and there is much to accomplish these last two weeks. I want to thank all of you for your service and commitment to our students and their families.  I appreciate all that you do and am grateful to work alongside of each of you as we help to prepare our next generation of leaders.

Sincerely,
Richard Stokes
Superintendent, Carson City School District

CARSON HIGH SCHOOL IN-PERSON GRADUATION SET FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 5

GraduationCarson High School will host a traditional in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021, Saturday, June 5, 2021, starting at 9 a.m. The ceremony will take place on the football field. Attendees will be able to sit in the bleachers and other areas will be available such as grass areas and the outside edge of the football field. Attendees must wear a mask and are encouraged to sit with their families or selected pods. The high school asks that families/pods socially distance from each other.

Please remember that if the community health status takes a turn for the worse and the City or State guidance changes, Carson High School will have to adapt graduation plans to match health directives and expectations. More info here.

MASKS REQUIRED THROUGH REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

MasksIt is good news to hear the CDC has eased outdoor and indoor mask-wearing guidance. We are hopeful of more normality on the horizon. However, to be more fully clear for our parents, families, employees and educators, the Carson City School District will continue to follow the health and safety protocols that currently exists within the district and the COVID-19 Mitigation Transition Plan set forth by the Carson City Board of Supervisors. Therefore, for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, masks will continue to be required indoors and where individuals are unable to socially distance, regardless of vaccination status.

Face coverings must be worn on all school campuses and sites, on school buses and during school-associated activities by all students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors. By taking this step, there will be less disruption to the school day and we can continue with the classroom habits that we have learned this year. We will revisit the plan this summer and make any necessary changes prior to the start of school, but we do look forward to the possibilities of normal “school as usual” for the coming 2021-2022 school year. For more information, please contact the Carson City School District at 775-283-2100.

NO MAKE UP DAYS REQUIRED FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER FOR STUDENTS

Snow DayThe Carson City School District is pleased to announce it meets or exceeds the minimum number of minutes taught per day, and in turn, students will not be required to make up the days lost due to a weather-related school cancellation at the end of the school year. The last day of school for students will remain Thursday, June 3, 2021. Teachers and staff, however, must return to school June 4, 7 and 8 to fulfill their contracts and receive professional development.

After reviewing CCSD’s submitted calendar revisions for the 2020-2021 school year, the Nevada Department of Education (NDOE) determined CCSD to be in compliance with NAC 387.120. NDOE formally approved the missed days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, September 15, 16 and 18, 2020 as well as Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, January 27, 28 and 29, 2021) and, based upon the annual instructional time, counted them as ‘days in session’ for the calendar school year 2020-2021. EDUCATORS AND EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR HONORED

Employees of the YearTad Williams, Jr., fifth grade teacher at Fritsch Elementary School, was honored April 27 as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, Jillian Shufelt, Distance Education assistant at Pioneer High School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional (ESP) Employee of the Year for the district.

During the school board meeting and annual event, the Carson City School District also recognized Dan Brown, principal at Fritsch Elementary School as the district’s Administrator of the Year

YouTubeWilliams and Shufelt were selected from 25 site winners including 11 teachers and 14 ESP employees who were selected from peers and administrators from various sites and schools within the district. The Administrator of the Year was selected from nominations from 27 school administrators. Each candidate endured a series of strenuous interview questions from a panel of comprehensive judges. Upon conclusion of those interviews, the panel then made the difficult decision of selecting “one” ESP employee of the year, “one” educator of the year and “one” administrator of the year. To see the complete list of individual site winners, please click here or view the entire meeting on YouTube

REMINDER: SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAM EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 2022

Free MealsThe Carson City School District’s (CCSD) Nutrition Services is pleased to announce the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to provide free lunch and breakfast for all students 18 and under for the 2021-2022 school year (ending June 2022).

The USDA’s national school meal programs have long been a vital source of nutritious meals for students. Families normally need to meet income requirements to qualify for free or reduced breakfasts and lunches. But as schools closed during the pandemic, the USDA eased restrictions so schools could focus on providing meals while keeping families and staff safe. CCSD’s Nutrition Services is excited to continue to do this without the hassle of free or reduced applications.

MUCH-OVERDUE CELEBRATION FOR NICK JACQUES

Milken AwardSuperintendent of Public Instruction, Jhone Ebert, visited Carson High School and presented Nick Jacques with the Milken Educator Award obelisk on Wednesday, May 12. This much-overdue celebration follows the October 2019 school assembly where Mr. Jacques was surprised with the Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 award check

Often called the "Oscars of teaching," the Milken Educator Award has become a national symbol of the crucial role those outstanding educators play in strengthening the skills, knowledge, and experiences of students in our schools.

Milken AwardMr. Jacques is the Director of Bands at Carson High School and is in his 10th year of teaching overall.  Mr. Jacques earned his National Board Certification in 2018, was recognized as Carson City School District's Teacher of the Year in 2019, and a finalist for Nevada's Teacher of the Year also in 2019.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER PAIRS TEACH, REACH TOGETHER

Sabrina and Michele CacioppoAs seen in the Nevada Appeal… Mother’s Day was a little more low-key this year coming out of the pandemic, but the celebration was no less special for at least four Carson City moms and daughters working daily to help students succeed.

The following four duos affirmed the value of having close family members in the Carson City School District with similar interests as teachers or education support professionals in previous capacities as they’ve completed their college degrees, pursued their Nevada exams, National Board Certifications or acquired their Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or other licenses, bounced ideas off each other for the classroom to help their students or simply have been there for each other in life and to celebrate Mother’s Day in traditional ways – or not – by choice. Read the full article here.

Amy and Alyssa JensenOur most sincere apologies for missing Ms. Snelling and Ms. Ashbaugh-Lorett in the article. We worked diligently with our Human Resources Department to help identify these unique teaching relationships within the district, and we regret that we missed these two. Initially, HR only identified two mother-daughter pairs. Only when we began doing interviews did we later learn of two additional pairs. So sorry to miss another great teaching duo. Please know, these two teachers are just as appreciated as the other four pairs featured in the article. Happy belated Mother's Day.

UNIMAGINABLE IVY LEAGUE DREAM FOR CRISTIAN GARCIA PEREZ

Cristian Garcia Perez Carson High School Senior Cristian Garcia Perez never believed that he would leave Carson City in order to attend an Ivy League university. However, this August he will be headed to Hanover, New Hampshire where he will be attending Dartmouth College with a scholarship covering nearly all tuition and expenses. This year, Dartmouth’s acceptance rate was only 6%, making it one of the most competitive schools in the nation.

Cristian Garcia Perez It is uncommon for a Carson City student to be accepted at an Ivy League school, let alone be granted a large scholarship to do so. He has also received offers at many other top universities including: University of Southern California, University of Pennsylvania (5% acceptance rate), Cornell, Carleton, Vanderbilt, Duke (4% acceptance rate) and several others.

“I went from last year, planning on heading to Western Nevada College or maybe even just straight to work, to accomplishing all of this,” Cristian, an Advance Placement (AP) student with a GPA of 5.1, said. “It’s honestly really emotional because I always felt like I was just a mediocre kid, but this has changed my entire perspective.”  Read the full story here.

#WHYITEACHCARSON VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS TEACHING IN A PANDEMIC

YouTubeThe Carson City School District recently added a new video to a playlist at CarsonCitySchools.com that highlights how incredible the teaching profession is, as well as the many challenges faced and rewards that come from being an educator.

#WhyITeachCarson is a visual concept that features the reasons and motivations behind teaching and provides insight into the craft of education. Alyssa Jensen, a third grade teacher at Mark Twain Elementary School, is the fifth teacher to be featured from the school district.

This specific video discusses some of the challenges associated with teaching in a pandemic and how eager and “hungry” students are to physically be in school and learn with their friends and from their teacher(s). Ms. Jensen also talks about her experience being a product of the Carson City School District and which teacher helped influence her desires to make a career in teaching. SHANE QUILLING WEIGHT ROOM DEDICATION

Shane QuillingCarson High School will be renaming its weight room in honor of the late, long-time CHS teacher and coach, Shane Quilling. The dedication will be held Thursday, June 3, at 2 p.m., outside in the area between the weight room back exit/entrance and the team/player entrance to the football field.

Quilling taught and coached at Carson High for more than 18 years. He served as head coach of the Carson High Senators Varsity Football Team for 7 years before stepping down in 2007. He also coached Track and Field and Softball. Along with his coaching career, Quilling taught various P.E. and Health classes.

FULL-TIME ONLINE LEARNING OFFERED ONLY THROUGH PIONEER ACADEMY

Pioneer AcademyFor the coming 2021-2022 school year, the Carson City School District (CCSD) is shifting all full-time online education for elementary, middle and high school students to one consolidated site: Pioneer Academy (grades 1-12). Pioneer Academy will replace all individual school site remote learning models the district created at the start of the 2020-2021 school year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because these shifts in practice have in essence created an entirely new school, the district is requiring all families who wish to continue with (or enroll in) full-time online learning to complete and submit applications for acceptance into Pioneer Academy. Pioneer Academy has a limited number of spaces available for all three levels (elementary, middle, and high). Approved applications will go onto a first-come, first-served waiting list. Click here for additional details and student and family expectations.

DISTRICT OFFICE EXPANSION AND REMODEL JUNE 7 THROUGH NOVEMBER

District OfficeEffective Monday, June 7, the Carson City School District office building will undergo an expansion and remodel. The majority of the staff will be temporally relocated until November 2021 while construction ensues. During the remodel, those needing to visit Human Resources should check-in at the district office from the east entrance through Fiscal Services. Employees of Educational Services and the Office of the Superintendent will be relocated to the Professional Development Center (PDC) at 604 West Musser Street. Neither the Department of Information Technology nor Fiscal Services will be affected by the construction. Please call 775-283-2000 before visiting to ensure the correct location of your intended destination.

PRE-K, KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AND ANNUAL UPDATES

RegistrationOnline registration, annual updates and elective class selections are underway in the Carson City School District. The annual update is an online process that allows families to verify and submit yearly required information such as current home address, contact information and emergency contacts, which are necessary in order for district administrators and teachers to contact parents or families. This online process eliminates the forms and paperwork that used to be required for annual registration.

Using the online Infinite Campus Parent Portal registration tool, parents and families can easily update student information from any device. With each new school year, the district requires that every student’s demographic information including phone numbers, (home, work and cell) and emergency contacts are up-to-date and accurate. The district also needs this information updated each year to allow students to attend field trips, have their photo taken, update medical records, use district technologies, etc. Students will not receive a Chromebook unless the online updates have been completed. Additionally, students that do not have updates submitted prior to the first day of school cannot be guaranteed their choice of classes including electives. Please click here for a complete list of directions and other necessary links and helpful information.

Enrollment is contingent on income verification, school zone and the date the application is submitted. Parents will need to provide proof of qualification by supplying the following documents:

  1. Poverty Guidelines 2021Proof of meeting income guidelines by completing and submitting the Income Verification Application (English) or Income Verification Application (Spanish). PRINCIPALS GET SLIMED, DANCE, BRING BALLOONS FOR READING, TESTING

Seeliger Kindergartener Remo Webster douses Kindergarten Teacher Mary Keck with pink slime in celebration of Map Test ScoresReading week and testing weeks are exciting times at elementary schools and often include special events like visits from hot air balloons or exciting dress-up days. Kudos to all the principals, vice principals and teachers and staff who either danced for or were slimed by students who surpassed reading goals during National Reading Week or who reached their MAP test Growth Targets.

Whether it was a jaw-dropping, foot-stomping dance competition that generated jeers and cheers from students or a dousing of a sticky and ooey-gooey concoction created of vanilla pudding and apple sauce with green or pink food coloring, all were great sports in celebrating with students who met their reading and testing goals.
